BREAKING RECORDS
After setting a meet record in the 100-meter freestyle, Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) took home his third gold medal at the Columbus Grand Prix on March 11 in Columbus, Ohio. Teammate Matt Grevers (Lake Forrest, Ill.) also set a meet record in the 200-meter backstroke, while Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) earned two gold medals and two silver medals at the competition.
BIATHLON
The U.S. women's relay squad - comprised of Sara Studebaker (Boise, Idaho), Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.), Annelies Cook (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and Lanny Barnes (Durango, Colo.) - raced to an 11th-place finish at the world championships in Ruhpolding, Germany, on March 10. On the men's side, Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.), Jay Hakkinen (Kasilof, Alaska), Tim Burke (Lake Placid, N.Y.) and Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.) led Team USA to a 10th-place finish.
CANOE/KAYAK
With his gold-medal performance in the men's C-1 at the 2012 Slalom Pan American Championships in Foz do Iguassu, Brazil, Benn Franker (Peachtree, Ga.) clinched a 2012 Olympic quota spot for Team USA. Eric Hurd (Woodstock, Ga.) and Jeff Larimer (Marietta, Ga.) also qualified a U.S. start position in slalom double canoe on March 10.
CURLING
Stephen Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.) and teammates Korey Dropkin (Southborough, Mass.), Thomas Howell (Brick, N.J.), Derek Corbett (Rochester, N.Y.) and Cameron Ross (Princeton Junction, N.J.) finished fifth in Team USA's first world junior championships appearance in Oestersund, Sweden, on March 8.
CYCLING
The 13 Americans representing Team USA tallied 11 medals at the Pan American Continental Track Championships in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Overall, the U.S. earned two gold medals, two silver medals and seven bronze medals.
EQUESTRIAN
Jim Koford (Raleigh, N.C.) and horse Pharaoh won the grand prix freestyle at Global Dressage Festival's CDI in Wellington, Fla., on March 12.
Para-equestrian dressage riders Laura Goldman (Highland Heights, Ohio), Sydney Collier (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Briana Beckworth (Wilber, Neb.) concluded the 2012 Rancho Valencia CPED13* with Grade Ia, Grade II and Grade III freestyle and individual division titles in Del Mar, Calif. Barbara Adside (Acton, Calif.) and Beckworth also won Grade II and Grade III division titles in the team tests.
FENCING
Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Org.) reclaimed her No. 1 world ranking after winning the bronze medal at the Antalya World Cup in Antalya, Turkey, on March 10. Teammates Dagmara Wozniak (Avenel, N.J.) and Ibtihaj Muhammad (Mapelwood, N.J.) finished 12th and 32nd.
Team USA took home four medals at the International Challenge Cup in The Hague, Netherlands. Jeremy Abbott (Aspen, Colo.) earned a silver medal, Alissa Czisny (Sylvania, Ohio) earned a bronze medal and both of the American entries at the junior level earned gold.
MODERN PENTATHLON
Sam Sacksen (Somerset, Pa.) wrapped up the weekend with a 29th-place finish at the Modern Pentathlon World Cup #1 in Charlotte, N.C.
SITTING VOLLEYBALL
The U.S. men's sitting volleyball team finished in eighth place at the Intercontinental Cup after enduring losses to Brazil and Croatia on March 8 in Cairo, Egypt.
SKL & SNOWBOARD
Alpine skier Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) earned his fourth career world cup giant slalom title on March 10 in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
Lindsey Vonn (St. Paul, Minn.) earned a giant slalom victory to secure an American record fourth Audi FIS Alpine World Cup overall title in Are, Sweden. Teammate Mikaela Shiffren (Eagle-Vail, Colo.) tied for ninth to earn her fourth top-10 world cup finish in her rookie season.
Ryan Cochran-Siegle (Starksboro, Vt.) closed out the junior world ski championships by adding one more gold medal to his collection with a victory in the men's combined. Earlier in the week he won gold in the downhill, placed 28th in giant slalom and finished 10th in slalom.
Alana Nichols (Farmington, N.M.) and Danelle Umstead (Taos, N.M.) won bronze medals in the women's sitting and visually impaired categories of the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup in Winter Park, Colo., on March 9.
SOCCER
The U.S. Women's National Team captured third place at the 2012 Algarve Cup after defeating Sweden, 4-0, on March 7 in Parchal, Portugal.
The U.S. U-20 Women's National Team came from behind to defeat Canada, 2-1, in the title game of the CONCACAF U-20 Women's Championship in Panama City, Panama.
SPEEDSKATING
Lana Gehring (Glenview, Ill.) earned bronze in the ladies' 500-meter short track race at the world championships in Shanghai, China. Her win gave Team USA its first podium in the 500 since Bonnie Blaire won gold at the 1986 World Championships.
The U.S. long track team closed the 2012 ISU World Cup season with four podium wins in Berlin, Germany. Shani Davis (Chicago, Ill.) and Heather Richardson (High Point, N.C.) skated to gold- and silver-medal victories in the 1,000- meter, while Jonathan Kuck (Champaign, Ill.) earned bronze in the 5,000-meter. Brian Hansen (Glenview, Ill.) and Kuck also won bronze in the men's team pursuit.
TENNIS
Teenager Christina McHale (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.) stunned Wimbledon champion and 2011 WTA player of the year Petra Kvitova with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory at the BNP Paribas Open on March 11 in Indian Wells, Calif. With the win, McHale advances to the fourth round of competition.
TRACK & FIELD
Team USA concluded the 2012 World Indoor Championships on March 11 in Istanbul, Turkey, with the most gold medals in team history - 10. Long jumper Brittney Reese (Gulfport, Miss.), 3,000-meter runner Bernard Lagat (Kapsabet, Kenya), triple jumper Will Claye (Phoenix, Ariz.) and 60-meter hurdler Aries Merritt (Marietta, Ga.) all brought home gold medals, along with the men's 4x400-meter relay team. On March 10, heptathlete Ashton Eaton (Bend, Ore.) joined 400-meter runner Sanya Richards-Ross (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), high jumper Chaunte Lowe (Riverside, Calif.), 60-meter runner Justin Gatlin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and shot putter Ryan Whiting (Harrisburg, Pa.) in claiming gold in their respective events.
Mo Trafeh (Durante, Calif.) and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (Rome, Ga.) raced to victories at the USA 15-km Championships in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 11.
