DUNEDIN, Fla. – Omar Vizquel, the 44-year-old infielder auditioning for a utility job with the Blue Jays, made a couple of sparkling defensive plays at third base and hit a two-run single in Toronto's 4-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.
Vizquel, who would be the oldest player in the majors, is a non-roster invitee on a minor league contract. Almost exclusively a shortstop in 23 big league seasons, Vizquel threw out Scott Beerer in the second inning after he barehanded Beerer's hard-hit shot just inside the foul line.
Two innings later, Vizquel backhanded Jai Miller's high bouncer a few steps onto the outfield grass and threw him out by two steps. Vizquel's bases-loaded single in the fourth followed three walks and Travis Snider's run-scoring single off Armando Galarraga.
Colby Rasmus had an RBI double off Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen in the second, and Ryan Flaherty added one in the seventh.
Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow allowed one hit and struck out two in three innings.
