Tampa, FL – The New York Yankees have re-signed infielder time Gold Glove winner to a one-year contract.
Chavez spent the 2011 season in the Bronx and proved to be a valuable addition when healthy, adding depth to the corner infield positions. He appeared in just 58 games, including 42 at third base, missing nearly three months because of a broken foot suffered in early May.
The 34-year-old veteran batted .263 with two homers and 26 runs batted in. He did not commit an error in the field, and was the only player to appear in at least 40 games at third base without a miscue.
Chavez spent his first 13 big league seasons with Oakland and is a career .267 hitter with 232 homers and 813 runs batted in.
The Yankees also placed recently-signed pitcher David Aardsma on the 60-day disabled list as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery performed last July.
