A preliminary autopsy has found that the son of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin died from drowning.
The Oshkosh Police Department released a statement Wednesday, saying the cause of Michael Philbin's death was from fresh water drowning. The release said no other evidence of foul play was discovered during the autopsy.
Toxicology results and other studies will not be available for several weeks.
The 21-year-old Philbin was found dead in a Wisconsin river after being reported missing Sunday night. He had been visiting friends in Oshkosh the previous evening and was last heard from around 2 a.m. local time Sunday, police said. Divers recovered the body on Monday.
The tragedy comes with the Packers preparing to face the New York Giants in the NFC Divisional Playoffs on Sunday. It was unclear as of Tuesday afternoon if Joe Philbin would remain with the team this week or take a leave of absence.
