OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders fired head coach Hue Jackson Tuesday, marking the seventh time in a decade the team will change coaches.
The move came just hours before a scheduled news conference to introduce new general manager Reggie McKenzie.
The 46-year-old Jackson expressed shock and anger after being informed he would not be retained in a morning meeting with McKenzie.
"I did everything possible to keep my job," Jackson told CSN Bay Area. "I was not in his plans for the future and he basically wants to gut this place."
Jackson added that McKenzie "wants to bring in his own guys."
Jackson was 8-8 in his only season as Raiders coach. He was promoted from offensive coordinator in 2010, when the team fired Tom Cable following an 8-8 finish.
The hiring of McKenzie, the Packers' former director of football operations, led to immediate speculation that he would seek to pick a new coach.
The firing caps a somber year for the Raiders, following the Oct. 8 death of longtime owner Al Davis.
Less than two weeks later, Jackson urged the front office to trade for idled quarterback Carson Palmer. The Raiders gave away their 2012 first-round pick and a 2013 second-round pick to acquire Palmer, a move widely viewed as a short-term gamble.
The team came within one victory of winning the AFC West, but lost in Week 17 to San Diego, leaving them out of the playoffs for the ninth straight season.
