Marquette heads south to tangle with LSU

Baton Rouge, LA – The Marquette Golden Eagles are off to an conference clash with the LSU Tigers.

Marquette is one of a handful of undefeated teams left in the nation, sporting a 10-0 mark to date. The schedule has been rather soft, but victories over the likes of Wisconsin and Washington away from home are certainly notable. On Saturday, the club cruised to a 93-72 triumph over Northern Colorado in front of the home crowd.

As for LSU, it has won its last four games to improve to 7-3 overall. The Tigers defeated UC Irvine on Thursday by a 66-59 final and are now 3-1 in front of the home crowd. While Marquette competes in the loaded Big East, LSU certainly has its plate full with a tough slate of SEC games upcoming.

Marquette won its only previous meeting with LSU by a 101-79 final during the 1970 NIT.

The duo of Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder has been tremendously productive for Marquette so far this season. Johnson-Odom is netting 18.8 ppg while Crowder provides 17.6 ppg on 55.6 percent field goal efficiency and 7.1 rpg. The Golden Eagles are also getting 11.6 ppg from Vander Blue and 11.0 ppg from freshman Todd Mayo. Marquette is scoring 84.0 ppg on 49.7 percent field goal efficiency, and the club is allowing just 62.1 ppg on to opponents on 37.4 percent shooting. In the 21-point victory over Northern Colorado last time out, Mayo led his club with 22 points, while Blue tallied 18 points in that affair. Crowder netted 19 points and ripped down 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who won despite the absence of Johnson-Odom. The star was suspended for the game for an unspecified violation of team rules and is expected to be back in the lineup tonight.

Justin Hamilton has led LSU in scoring the last two times out and places second on the squad with 11.5 ppg this season. He is also tied for first on the boards with 6.5 rpg and shoots 51.3 percent from the floor. Andre Stringer brings 12.1 ppg to the court to pace the club, and Anthony Hickey rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers with his 10.3 ppg. The Tigers are generating 69.5 ppg despite their 39.2 percent field goal efficiency, and they are surrendering 63.1 ppg to opponents. In the seven-point win over UC Irvine last time out, Hamilton netted 14 points while Eddie Ludwig posted 12 points. Hamilton also ripped down 11 rebounds in the affair for the Tigers, who finished with 50 rebounds in that game, 20 of which were of the offensive variety. An 18-9 edge in points from the foul line certainly helped the cause, as did outstanding defense.
