Tigers and Vols continue play in Maui

Maui, HI – The eighth-ranked Memphis Tigers and Tennessee round action of the Maui Invitational on Monday.

The Tigers were knocked off by 15th-ranked Michigan on Monday, falling to the Wolverines, 73-61. It marked just the second game of the season for Memphis, which opened the 2011-12 season with a 97-81 victory at home over Belmont.

The Volunteers opened their new season with a pair of lopsided wins over ULM (85-62) and UNC Greensboro (92-63), with both games coming in the friendly confines of the Thompson-Boling Arena. Tennessee took on sixth-ranked Duke on Monday in the first round of this event and fell 77-67.

This marks the 23rd all-time meeting between these two instate rivals, with Tennessee holding a 14-8 series advantage.

It was a poor shooting performance by Memphis that did in the Tigers against Michigan on Monday, as Memphis shot a mere 33.3 percent from the floor to Michigan's 54 percent. The Wolverines jumped all over the Tigers early, knocking down seven of their first eight shots. Charles Carmouche was the only Tiger to finish in double figures with 14 points, on 6-of-12 shooting. Will Barton was just 3-of-12 shooting, adding nine points in defeat. It was a harsh contrast to the season-opener, where Memphis routed Belmont, shooting a blistering .585 from the floor. Barton led the way in the win over the Bruins with 23 points, followed closely by Wesley Witherspoon and Josh Jackson with 22 and 20 points, respectively.

Jeronne Maymon posted 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Volunteers, but the team still couldn't get past Duke on Monday, falling by 10 points. Three others finished in double figures in the setback for UT, with Trae Golden Jordan McRae and Cameron Tatum chipping in with 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Vols struggled to find their range in the first half, shooting a mere .333 overall, including an 0-of-6 showing from behind the arc. Despite shooting 52 percent over the final 20 minutes, they could not get past the Blue Devils. Golden was a scoring machine coming into this event, averaging 23.0 ppg over UT's first two outings, but played sparingly in the first half against Duke due to foul trouble.
