London, England – Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs will be out four to five weeks after undergoing a hernia operation, the English Premier League club announced Friday.
The injury was uncovered after Gibbs sustained a stomach injury in training a month ago, and the Gunners could now be without the 22-year-old until late in December.
"He has a hernia and had surgery on Thursday. He looks like he will be out for between four and five weeks," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.
"At first he had an abdominal strain, certainly caused by the fact that he had a hernia already."
Wenger also revealed that defender Carl Jenkinson has a back problem and will miss some time as well, but it was unknown how long.
"We have had some bad news because we have lost two fullbacks over the break, but apart from that all the players came back in good shape and everybody is available," Wenger said.
"Carl has a stress fracture in his back. That's just about rest now."
