Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells will be sidelined an undefined period of time after suffering a knee injury in Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cards head coach Ken Whisenhunt on Monday refuted an earlier report which stated Wells suffered a bone bruise and was in line to miss one to two weeks. Whisenhunt did not reveal the specific injury Wells sustained, nor did he offer any kind of timetable for recovery, but stated that Wells' knee did "lock up on him" and that it will not require surgery.

Whisenhunt added that the club will monitor Wells' progress throughout the week.

In Wells' absence, Alfonso Smith has been tabbed as the likely starter, with Chester Taylor and LaRod Stephens-Howling also in the mix.

The 23-year-old Ohio State product rushed for 42 yards on 12 attempts in the 32-20 defeat to the defending AFC champs. He has totaled 423 yards and six TDs on 91 rushes this season.

Arizona plays at Baltimore this coming Sunday.
