Couples wins AT&T Championship by a touchdown

San Antonio, TX – Fred Couples chipped in for birdie on the under 66 and win the AT&T Championship by seven strokes.

Couples finished at 23-under-par 193.

A day after matching the course record and breaking the 36-hole record, Couples set the new tournament scoring mark with his total of 193. Mark McNulty, who also owned the 36-hole record, had the old tournament mark of 195 at the TPC San Antonio.

Mark Calcavecchia also shot 66 to take second at minus-16.

"I was a little bit unnerved early on when 'Calc' got it to four-under at 10, but I started hitting the ball better after I made par at seven," Couples stated. "Once we got to the back nine, I really started playing better."

Tom Lehman and John Cook both carded 66s to share third place at 14-under-par 202. Peter Senior, who played the entire tournament bogey-free, took fifth at minus-13 after closing with a 67.

Couples led by seven entering the round, but Calcavecchia managed to put some pressure on the U.S. Presidents Cup captain.

Calcavecchia birdied the third to cut the margin to six. Both Calcavecchia and Couples birdied the par-five sixth.

Birdies on the eighth and 10th got Calcavecchia within four with eight holes to play.

Couples responded in fine fashion. He converted back-to-back birdie efforts at the 11th and 12th to push his lead back to six.

Calcavecchia birdied the 14th, but Couples came right back with a birdie on No. 15. The duo both birdied the 17th, before Couples chipped in for birdie at the last to win by seven.

Couples won for the second time this season and for the sixth time on the Champions Tour.

"I drove it well and putted well this week. I felt good considering it was my third week in a row," said Couples, who has long battled a bad back.

Calcavecchia was denied his second victory of the season.

"I think it came down to one shot for him. I got it to four-under after 10 and I thought if he hit a bad tee shot, I might have a chance, but he went birdie- birdie and that was it," Calcavecchia said of Couples. "He stepped up and hit a good tee shot at 11 and a nice wedge. I played really good except for a bad shot at 15."

NOTES: Couples collected $270,000 for the victory and joined Lehman and Cook as the only multiple winners this year...Rod Spittle, the 2010 champ, stumbled to a two-over 73 on Sunday to slide into a share for 54th at two-over-par 218...Last week's winner Brad Faxon closed with a one-under 71 to tie for 59th at plus-three...After two weeks off, the Champions Tour returns to action with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. John Cook won that title by two shots last year...Only the top-five players -- Lehman, Calcavecchia, Senior, Cook and Russ Cochran -- on the points list can win the season-long Charles Schwab Cup...The top-30 on the points list were unchanged from last week.
