Royals, Twins conclude season at Target Field

Lefty Bruce Chen can equal a career-high in victories game series with the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Chen, who's played for 10 big-league teams, was 13-10 with Baltimore in 2005 before skidding to zero wins in both 2006 and 2007 and falling out of the majors in 2008.

He had one win in 2009.

Chen rebounded to win 12 games in 33 appearances with the Royals in 2010 and is 12-8 through 24 starts this season, including an eight-inning gem over the Chicago White Sox on Friday in which he allowed a run on two hits in an 11-1 victory.

He last faced the Twins on Sept. 13 in Kansas City and allowed two hits in eight shutout innings in a 4-0 decision. Chen is 2-4 in 16 career games against Minnesota with a 5.54 earned run average over 50 1/3 innings.

On Tuesday, Rene Tosoni's sixth-inning grand slam proved to be the difference as Minnesota downed Kansas City by a 7-4 count.

Chris Parmelee added a solo shot and both Denard Span and Ben Revere knocked in a run for the Twins, who avoided their first 100-loss season since 1982.

Anthony Swarzak (4-7) allowed 10 hits and two runs while fanning six over 6 1/3 innings for the win.

Johnny Giavotella hit two doubles and a triple for the Royals, who saw their two-game win streak snapped.

Sean O'Sullivan (2-6) was tagged in defeat for nine hits and six runs over five-plus frames.

For the Twins, righty Carl Pavano meets the Royals for the 18th time in his big-league career and his 291st appearance.

He dropped a 4-0 decision to Chen in the Sept. 13 game after scattering 11 hits and four runs in seven innings.

Pavano is 0-2 in three starts since his last win, a 5-4 defeat of the White Sox on Sept. 7.

The Twins are 3-7 in his last 10 appearances since early August.

Minnesota has won nine of 17 meetings with Kansas City this season.
