Defensive tackles Nick Hayden and Corvey man limit on Saturday.

The Panthers also placed offensive tackle Garry Williams on season-ending injured reserve, while rookie cornerback Brandon Hogan will miss at least the first six weeks of the 2011 campaign after being put on the reserve physically unable to perform list.

Hayden started 10 times during Carolina's 2-14 campaign of 2010, while Irvin -- a third-round pick of the Panthers in 2009 -- had been running with the first team for most of this preseason. The moves suggest first-year head coach Ron Rivera will place a pair of rookies, Sione Fua and Terrell McClain, in the starting lineup for the team's Sept. 11 season opener at Arizona.

Both McClain and Fua were selected in the third round of this past April's draft.

Carolina also waived defensive tackle Deljuan Robinson, giving the club just three players (McClain, Fua, Andre Neblett) at the position on the current roster. The Panthers were forced to place projected starter Ron Edwards on injured reserve with a torn triceps the veteran sustained early in camp.

Williams, an 11-game starter at right tackle in 2010, fractured his ankle in Thursday's preseason finale against Pittsburgh. Hogan, Carolina's fourth-round selection in this past draft, is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered during his senior year at West Virginia.

The Panthers also released two vested veterans, cornerback C.J. Wilson and wide receiver Wallace Wright, while wide receivers Darvin Adams, Charly Martin Jarmorris Warren, offensive tackle Jacob Bender, cornerbacks Kendric Burney, Chevis Jackson and Robert McClain, defensive ends Ugo Chinasa and Malcolm Tatum, fullback Tony Fiammetta, centers John Gianninoto and Ryan Pugh, safety Michael Greco, kicker Adi Kunalic, tight end Greg Smith, running backs Tyrell Sutton and Josh Vaughan and linebackers Sean Ware and Lawrence Wilson were all let go.

Fiammetta, Carolina's fourth-round choice in 2009, started nine games at fullback for the Panthers last season but was a victim of the change in coaching regimes. Wilson was taken by the Panthers in the sixth round (166th overall) of this past April's draft.
