New Orleans, LA – The New Orleans Saints released defensive end Alex Brown and signed veteran kicker John Kasay on Tuesday.
The transactions were among a slew of moves made by New Orleans to reach the 80-player roster limit.
Brown, 32, signed a two-year contract with the Saints in April 2010 after spending eight years with the Chicago Bears. He started all 16 games last season and totaled 39 tackles with a career-low two sacks.
The Florida product has appeared in 143 straight games, the longest current consecutive games played streak among defensive ends. He has compiled 528 tackles with five interceptions and 12 fumble recoveries during his career.
The 41-year-old Kasay will be entering his 20th NFL season. He currently sits eighth on the league's all-time points scored list with 1,823. The Georgia alumnus spent his first four seasons in Seattle before signing with the Panthers in 1995 and spending the next 15 seasons with them.
Last year, Kasay converted 25-of-29 of his field goals for a conversion rate of 86.2 percent, better than his 81.9 career percentage.
In other moves, New Orleans waived wide receiver John Chiles, tackle Dan Gay, fullback Kolby Hurt, safety DeAndre McDaniel, cornerback Mark Parson and center Ryan Taylor and placed guard Roger Allen, linebacker Ezra Butler, wide receiver Jarred Fayson and running back Chris Taylor on the waived/injured list.
