Cincinnati Reds rookie shortstop Zack Cozart had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on Friday.

He will resume baseball activities in four months and if everything goes as expected he will be fully recovered in time for spring training prior to the start of the 2012 season.

He suffered the injury in the fourth inning of a victory over the Braves on July 23 while trying to make a tag at second base on Atlanta's Nate McLouth.

Drafted in the second round of the 2007 draft by Cincinnati, the 25-year-old Cozart hit .324 with two homers in 11 games for the Reds this season.
