Gaven lifts Crew past Timbers 1-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eddie Gaven scored in the 79th minute to lift the Columbus Crew to a 1 -0 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday night.

Columbus (8-6-7) moved into a tie with Philadelphia for first place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of third-place New York. Portland (6-10-3) remained eighth in the West.

The winning play, originally credited as an own goal goal by Portland defender Mamadou Danso, began with a cross from the left flank by Robbie Rogers into the box to Chad Marshall, who headed the ball to Tommy Heinemann for a shot that hit the left post past diving goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

He and teammate Emilio Renteria were there for the rebound and Gaven was able to get a foot on the ball. It was almost all the way across the line when Danso chested it into the side netting.

The first score by Columbus (8-6-7) in 259 minutes pushed it into a first-place tie with Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of third-place New York.

The winning play, originally credited as an own goal goal by Portland defender Mamadou Danso, began with a cross from the left flank by Robbie Rogers into the box to Chad Marshall, who headed the ball to Tommy Heinemann for a shot that hit the left post past diving goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

"I don't know what happened after I hit it because I fell over," Gaven said. "Somehow it hit off the post and it came out to me. It kind of hit my leg and fortunately it went in. I didn't really have time to think."

Portland (6-10-3) controlled much of the lethargic first half when it had 10 of the 13 shots and both shots on goal.

"I don't think a loss was a fair result tonight," Portland coach John Spencer said. "We controlled most of the first half chances wise."

The Crew had a 13-5 shot advantage in the second and had a possible header goal by defender Chad Marshall denied in the 60th minute because referee Andrew Chapin ruled the ball did not cross the goal line even though replays showed it did.
