WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets have signed their captain to a big contract extension.

Andrew Ladd agreed to a US$22-million, five-year deal with the NHL team a few hours before being eligible to file for salary arbitration.

The contract has been in the works since the Atlanta Thrashers moved north to Winnipeg at the end of May.

Ladd had a career-high 29 goals and 59 points for the Thrashers last year.

He earned $2.35 million.

The 25-year-old is a two-time Stanley Cup champion who has 208 points (92-116) in 402 career NHL games.
