SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Daniel Sedin could have answered every question without even hearing what he was being asked. He knew what was coming because he's smart enough to realize that the story of the night for the Vancouver Canucks was how many power plays they gave San Jose.
Vancouver handed the Sharks 10 power-play opportunities and paid the price when San Jose scored three goals. The Sharks won Game 3 Friday night by a 4-3 margin, with the winning goal coming off Dan Boyle's stick while both Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows sat in the penalty box in the third period.
Still, Daniel listened to the questions served up to him by NHL.com and he gave the answers he already knew he was going to give.
Here is what he had to say:
Q: When a team is scoring on the power play and you keep giving them the chances, at what point do you realize or say, 'We just can't keep doing this to ourselves?'
A: Yeah, especially early on. We gave them the puck. They want the puck a lot and when they move it around it makes them a confident team. When they're up 3-0 it's a tough team to play. We need to stay out of the box, especially early. Even when we scored to make it 3-1 we took two quick ones. We can't do that.
Q: How hard is it to win a game when you don't score at least one goal on back-to-back 5-on-3s?
A: It's impossible. That was our chance to come back in the game, I thought. They blocked a lot of shots. I thought we played it pretty good, but they blocked a lot of shots so we need to maybe hold on to the puck even more and move it around, but we got the shots we wanted. They just didn't make it to the net.
Q: Do you look at the penalties tonight as discipline penalties or flow-of-the-game penalties that just happen?
A: I think some of them are flow of the game, but I didn't see every penalty. I think a lot of them were flow of the game. But, like I said, we got the 5-on-3s so we should have been able to come back in the game.
Q: When they scored first in the last two games you guys were unfazed. They scored first tonight and then second and third. Is that that just about the power plays, or is there more to it?
A: Yes, but they get going, too. When they score they feel good about themselves. I thought 5-on-5 we played a good game tonight. It's those early penalties, they cost us.
