Short on relief pitching for their series opener against the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees recalled right-hander Hector Noesi from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of the International League.

To clear a roster spot, the Yankees optioned right-hander Buddy Carlyle to the Triple-A farm team Friday.

The 24-year-old Noesi, who has never pitched in the major leagues, was 1-1 with a 3.92 ERA in four starts at Scranton. He served a 50-game suspension in 2007 after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing substance under the minor league drug program.

Carlyle was brought up by the Yankees on April 22 and had a 2.70 ERA in four relief appearances.
