HAMILTON, N.Y. – Temple assistant Matt Langel was hired Monday as the new coach of the Colgate Raiders.
Langel spent the past five seasons as an assistant under Fran Dunphy, who has led the Owls to four straight NCAA tournament appearances.
"I'm thrilled for Matt," Dunphy said. "Colgate gets a person with great character who is very wise and can be a mentor to all of his student-athletes."
Langel, 32, succeeds Emmett Davis, who was released from his contract in mid-March after finishing the season 7-23 overall and 4-10 in the Patriot League.
The 51-year-old Davis, who replaced the late Jack Bruen in 1998, was 165-212 in 13 seasons. Davis led the Raiders to the Patriot League Championship game in 2008, tying a school record for wins in a season with 18 in 2007-08.
Langel excelled on the court in college, scoring 1,181 points at Penn. He led the Quakers to two Ivy League titles and NCAA tournament appearances from 1996-2000. The Quakers went 27-1 in Ivy League play in his junior and senior seasons.
Langel, who briefly played professionally in Europe, also was a member of Dunphy's staff at Penn. Athletic director David Roach will formally introduce Langel on Thursday.
Under Dunphy and Langel, the Owls lost in the first round three consecutive seasons before defeating Penn State this year. They were eliminated in the second round by San Diego State.
