The Red Wings have placed Chris Osgood on the injured list, but Detroit could have the goalie back from a nagging groin injury before the end of the regular season.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says Osgood is eligible to return on April 8 with two games left. It is unknown if Osgood will be healthy enough to play then.

Detroit called up Joey MacDonald to back up Jimmy Howard on Wednesday night against the Vancouver Canucks.

Osgood had surgery in January for a hernia and was expected to be out six to eight weeks. He was hoping to play on March 12, but had a setback.

The 38-year-old Osgood has won three Stanley Cup titles and 401 NHL regular-season games. He is 5-3-2 with a 2.77 goals-against average in 11 games this season.
