NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Cleveland Indians have signed free agent first baseman Nick Johnson, adding some roster depth with the left-handed hitter, the American League club said on Monday.

Johnson, still recovering from surgery on his right wrist, was signed to a minor league contract, Major League Baseball website mlb.com reported.

The 32-year-old Johnson played just 24 games with the New York Yankees last season due to the injury.

In 2009, Johnson batted .291 with a .426 on-base percentage between stints with the Washington Nationals and Florida Marlins, hitting eight home runs and driving in 62.
