Top seed David Ferrer of Spain defeated compatriot Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 6-2 to defend his Mexican Open title on Saturday night.

Ferrer earned his 11th career title improved to 6-0 against Almagro.

After trading tiebreaks in two evenly contested sets, Ferrer broke Almagro's serve three times in the third set to claim victory.

Almagro, the third seed, was bidding to become the first player to win three of the four events on the ATP Tour's Latin American clay-court season, after winning tournaments in Argentina and Brazil the last two weeks.
