Calgary Flames' captain Jarome Iginla has withdrawn from the NHL All-Star game so he can spend time with his ailing grandmother.

Iginla released a statement through the team Wednesday that said he plans to be with Frances Schuchard on Jan. 28-30, when the NHL is holding its All-Star weekend in Raleigh, N.C.

Iginla said his maternal grandparents were "second parents" to him growing up and major influences on his life. His grandfather Richard Schuchard died last May.

Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere will replace Iginla in the All-Star lineup.

The 33-year-old Iginla has a goal and two assists in five All-Star games (2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009) and was named the Western Conference captain in 2008.
