OTTAWA (Reuters) - Ottawa Senators center Jason Spezza has been sidelined indefinitely after injuring his right shoulder, the National Hockey League team said Monday.

The 27-year-old was hurt during his team's 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday when he was hit and driven into the boards during the second period. He left the ice and did not return.

"I'm pretty disappointed. It's unfortunate," Spezza told reporters. "I knew right away, and once I got off the ice I knew something was pretty bad."

Spezza is hoping to avoid surgery and will not know if or when he can return this season for another week.

His nine goals, 11 assists and 20 points are all third-best tallies for the Senators this season.
