ROCK HILL, S.C. – George Valentine scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Winthrop defeated Jacksonville 73-66 on Sunday, ending the Dolphins' six-game winning streak.
The Eagles (5-5) led 32-28 at halftime and maintained their lead in the second half thanks to 23-of-52 shooting from the field (44.2 percent) and 23 made free throws.
Robbie Dreher led Winthrop with 18 points, Andre Jones and Gideon Gamble added 10 each. Charles Corbin grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Dolphins (6-2) were 24 for 66 from the floor (36.4 percent) and were just 3 for 19 from beyond the arc.
The defending Atlantic Sun champions had won their previous six games by an average of 11.8 points before Sunday's loss.
Delwan Graham scored 17 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Dolphins. Ayron Hardy added 12 points and seven rebounds.
