New Jersey authorities believe one baseball player went from stealing bases to stealing from his former boss.
Darren Ford, a player with World Series champions the San Francisco Giants, was accused by prosecutors Monday of stealing more than $2,000 from a car dealership he used to work for, according to Philly.com.
Ford originally claimed that a gunman stole the money from him last November. But this past June, police began to suspect that no robbery took place and contacted Major League Baseball just before charging Ford on July 2.
On Monday, Ford applied for a pretrial intervention program that could wipe out any record of the arrest.
"Pretrial intervention does not entail any kind of admission of any wrongdoing," Ford's attorney, Hank Hockeimer, told the website.
Ford has also been charged with filing a false police report and obstructing an investigation.
A Giants spokesman told Philly.com that Ford is still on their Major League roster and that he is expected to be at spring training next year.
