Ennis' SO goal lifts Sabres over Maple Leafs 3-2

TORONTO – Tyler Ennis scored the shootout winner for the last-place Buffalo Sabres, who beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on a Saturday night.

The Sabres rookie put a nice deke on Jean-Sebastien Giguere in the fifth round of the shootout and was then mobbed by his teammates. It was the first win in six games for the Sabres, who came in tied for the fewest points in the NHL.

Toronto squandered a third-period lead and lost in the shootout for the second straight game. The Maple Leafs were beaten 5-4 in Washington on Wednesday.

Derek Roy and Jochen Hecht scored in regulation for Buffalo (4-9-2).

Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin had goals for the Maple Leafs (5-5-3).

The Sabres had dropped five straight and are trying to get going after earning 100 points last season.

Hecht forced overtime when he tied it 2-2 with 13.1 seconds left in regulation. With goalie Jhonas Enroth on the bench for an extra attacker, Hecht was alone at the side of the net and he lifted a shot over Giguere.

Grabovski had gone 20 games without a goal, dating to March, and was clearly growing frustrated. He scored with a wrist shot from the point that sailed past Enroth with 16.6 seconds to play in the first period.

Shortly after Toronto's Clarke MacArthur fired wide — one of several good chances he had against his former team — Kulemin cycled in front and beat Enroth to the blocker side at 15:41 of the second. It was his third goal in three games.

Roy batted the puck past Giguere with 1:14 left in the second period after it hit him in the chest. It was his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
