NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mets pitcher John Maine was put on the 15-day disabled list on Friday because of a weakness in his right shoulder, the Major League Baseball team said on its website.
The move came a day after a furious Maine was pulled after just five pitches in his start against the Washington Nationals due to concern from the team over his lack of velocity.
The right-hander wanted to keep pitching, saying he had been warming up on the mound, but Mets manager Jerry Manuel was eager for the 29-year-old to undergo tests before he returned to the rotation.
"I just need some answers," Manuel told the team's website (http://newyork.mets.mlb.com) before Maine had a medical examination which revealed shoulder weakness.
