INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts have taken pass-rushing defensive end Jerry Hughes of TCU with the 31st overall pick in the NFL draft.

Hughes, chosen Thursday night, fills a hole left by the release of versatile defensive lineman Raheem Brock.

The Colts envision Hughes being their third pass-rusher, backing up Pro Bowl ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, and finding a backup for that duo has proved problematic in recent years.

Colts president Bill Polian thinks the 6-foot-1, 255-pound rush specialist can also hold up against the run and give Indy more flexibility on third down.

Indy won't pick again until Friday's second round.
