Kansas assistant coach Joe Dooley has been offered the job to return to East Carolina.
According to sources, Dooley, who spent four years as the head coach at ECU from 1995-99, is currently in negotiations with the ECU administration.
Dooley was 57-52 in four seasons at East Carolina after taking the job at just 29 years old, but was let go by a previous athletic director.
Dooley, 44, then spent three years as an assistant at New Mexico before joining Bill Self's staff at Kansas in 2003.
Dooley would replace Mack McCarthy, who has been reassigned to an administrative role after three years as the head coach. McCarthy was 34-55 in his tenure, following up a two-year period in which Ricky Stokes was 14-44 overall. The previous coach, Bill Herrion, was 60-80 in his five-year stint.
Dooley won 17 games in each of his first two seasons at ECU before winning 23 games over the next two years. He was an assistant to Eddie Payne when he was hired.
