Monica Seles, who ruled the tennis world in the early '90s only to have her career derailed by a deranged fan, just sold her house in Sarasota, FL, for $1.4 million.
The winner of nine Grand Slam singles titles initially listed the 5,871-square-foot mansion in 2014 for $1.85 million. Since then, it has bounced on and off the market.
"The home features a dramatic living room with french doors opening to the enormous pool area, making it perfect for entertaining," says Joel Schemmel of Sotheby's International Realty, who handled the sale.
Nestled next to the Laurel Oak Country Club, the tennis legend's former mansion sits on 1.5 acres, surrounded by white stucco walls and a security gate. The home is a blend of Mediterranean and Classical styles, with large Roman columns, Palladian windows, marble flooring, a two-story lanai, and an outdoor kitchen. Naturally, there's a full-size tennis court.
Seles, 42, and her family had the home custom built in 1991, Schemmel says. That was just two years before she was stabbed during a match in Hamburg, Germany. At the time, Seles was 19 and dominating the women's tennis tour. She mounted a brave comeback two years later and eventually retired from professional tennis in 2008.
The tennis legend said she plans to downsize, according to the Herald Tribune, but she isn't looking to leave Sarasota.
