Scheming! Bloodshed! Sex! And, of course, fur, brocade, and chandeliers for miles. Yes, "Game of Thrones" returned to HBO last Sunday, and we sank into it like a velvet chaise lounge in Littlefinger's bordello. So to speak, that is.
And while you're not going to be setting up house in Westeros anytime soon, if you just love the look of those regal chambers, we've got some dcor suggestions that are worthy of the Khaleesi herself.
Plum ikat fabric: The spymaster Varys, above, is usually cloaked in rich, elegant fabrics -- textiles play an integral part in setting the tone of both the characters and the locations in "Game of Thrones." Here, Varys is wearing a textured plum ikat brocade, which in both his world and ours is quite expensive. Textiles like this one can easily run $200 a yard. But here's a great linen blend that has a similar ikat pattern and rich color palette for only $18 a yard.
Decorative columns: Elaborately detailed structural elements like these carved columns give a sense of grandeur and history. Set designers for "Game of Thrones" may spend thousands of dollars creating custom columns for a set design. While there are some fiberglass faux columns available on the market for only a few hundred dollars, their designs tend to be in the traditional Doric/Ionic/Corinthian styles. To really get this look, splurge on intricately carved wood columns and paint them with a faux finish. Pacific Columns has some beautiful options that start around $360 for a paint-ready fluted column (and can run to $10,000, depending on size and customization).
Centerpiece lighting: Overscale focal-point lighting elements are a hot design trend in 2015, both in our world and that of would-be Queen Daenerys Targaryen. The ornate chandelier hanging above her makes for a great contrast with the modern cubist architecture in the rest of the space. A piece like this can easily cost thousands of dollars, but here's a great scroll chandelier with a similar style for only $200.
Architectural screens: Daenerys travels to exotic lands as she conquers, and each kingdom has some element of architectural surprise. Above, the architectural screens have a modern Craftsman vibe, juxtaposed with the medieval styling of other "Game of Thrones" kingdoms. Modern folding screens can provide a similar look, like this one for just over $100.
Brocade curtains: To enhance the aura of wealth in the House of Lannister, embroidered panels, rich tapestries, and other luxurious textiles are used liberally. Cut-velvet curtain panels like the one behind Cersei Lannister, however, can be quite pricey. Here's a great alternative for those who don't have an endless ability to pay off every staggering debt -- it's only $62 per panel.
