Conservative filmmaker Dennis Michael Lynch told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly he is suspicious of the charges against his fellow director Dinesh D’Souza, because he believes there is a “target” on the backs of those who make right-wing films.

D’Souza, the director of anti-Obama documentary “2016: Obama’s America,” is facing charges he violated federal campaign laws in 2012.

Lynch said on the “The Kelly File” he believes when conservative filmmakers make movies that have the potential to shift an upcoming election they become a target.

“You do that, you become dangerous to the other side,” Lynch said. “When you do that, you walk around with a target on your back. And that’s what you’re seeing.”

Lynch said it is very difficult to be a conservative in Hollywood, and those who try to make films with right-wing messages often face obstacles. He noted D’Souza’s new film “America” is scheduled to come out in July 2014, right before the midterm elections.

“It’s very strange that this is all taking place now,” he said.
