strong>WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — It's not unusual to hear commenters in the conservative Twitterverse say that Hillary Clinton can't draw a crowd — that her audiences are small and unenthusiastic compared to the big crowds Donald Trump attracts around the country.

Trump's crowds are certainly big. But when Clinton appeared with first lady Michelle Obama Thursday afternoon at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum at Wake Forest University here in Winston-Salem, the crowd was big, loud and enthusiastic.

The coliseum seats about 14,500 people. Perhaps one-fourth of that was blocked off behind the stage, but then again, there were people filling the floor. The Clinton campaign said about 11,000 were there, which seems about right. Originally, the campaign had set up black drapes to cover a large part of the upper deck — so that it would not appear empty — but workers removed the drapes as people poured into those sections.
