What will a Trump presidency mean for broadband expansion?

While President-elect Donald Trump hasn’t spoken much about his technology policy, especially as it relates to broadband expansion, it’s expected his plan will involve removing some of the regulations that have stymied high-speed internet investment.

On his campaign website, Trump vowed to issue a temporary moratorium on new agency regulations not compelled by Congress or public safety. The website says the move would help with private investment and jobs.

“We will no longer regulate our companies and our jobs out of existence,” it reads.

Berin Szoka, president of TechFreedom, said private enterprise has invested nearly $1.5 trillion over the years in broadband deployment.

“Yet broadband deployment remains unnecessarily difficult because of red tape, high fees and poor infrastructure planning at all levels of government,” he said. “Fixing that could bring faster, cheaper broadband to millions of Americans, especially in rural areas.”
