Donald Trump, in accepting the Republican presidential nomination Thursday, delivered a speech that appealed to his conservative base but also presented promises and hope to former Sen. Bernie Sanders’ supporters and other potential Democratic cross-over voters -- including better trade deals, improved schools and less crime in impoverished urban areas.
As the self-proclaimed “law-and-order” candidate, Trump zeroed in on the crime that has plagued some of the poorest and minority populations in U.S. cities.
“Homicides last year increased by 17 percent in America's 50 largest cities. That's the largest increase in 25 years,” Trump said. “In our nation's capital, killings have risen by 50 percent. They're up nearly 60 percent in nearby Baltimore.”
Trump and other Republicans have long argued that cities, frequently run by Democrats, have failed to protect residents and provide them with the kind of job opportunities that will end the cycle of poverty and crime.
“So to every parent who dreams for their children, and for every child who dreams of their own future, I say this: ‘I am with you. I will fight for you,’ ” Trump said.
The so-called political map -- essentially showing more Democratic than Republican voters across the country -- favors Democrat presidential nominees.
So Trump will need cross-over votes to win the White House, with his best likely hope supporters of Sanders, the Democratic presidential candidate who lost to Hillary Clinton and who carried a message of social and economic inequality.
Knowing that he’ll also need at least some of the Hispanic vote to win, Trump argued that nearly four in 10 African-American children are living in poverty and that 2 million more Latinos are in poverty, compared to when President Obama took his oath of office less than eight years ago.
He also called for an end to international trade deals that have taken U.S. manufacturing jobs overseas, just as Sanders had.
While Sanders pushed for free college education, Trump on Thursday vowed to help students “drowning in debt” from tuition loans.
He also vowed to protect members of the LGBTQ community, typically Democratic suppoters.
“If you want to hear the corporate spin, the carefully-crafted lies, and the media myths, the Democrats are holding their convention next week. Go there,” Trump said. “But here, at our convention, there will be no lies.”
