Tucker Carlson told viewers Wednesday on “Special Report with Bret Baier” that Donald Trump’s announcement he would meet with National Rifle Association officials was "not really the lesson of the Orlando shooting."
Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, tweeted that he wanted to meet with the NRA to discuss preventing individuals on the terror watch list and “no-fly list” from purchasing guns.
Carlson, a ‘FOX & Friends Weekend’ co-host and Fox News contributor, said Trump's offer was problematic because he "has kept the conversation on guns, [and] that's not really the lesson of the Orlando shooting."
By honing-in on the terror watch list, Trump is misdirecting the focus away from the cause of Sunday’s attack, “a guy [who] pledges allegiance to ISIS and kills 49 people— how's that the NRA's fault?" Carlson said.
"So by wading into this, we're talking about this as if this is a problem that could be solved with gun control,” Carlson said.
"No serious social scientist believes that— there's zero evidence for that."
"You can't solve that problem except with due process. Do we really want to live in a country where the government can take away one of your Constitutional rights without telling you because it doesn't like your opinions," Carlson said.
"We have a whole process for this. It's our criminal justice system, and we've had it for 225 years-- why are we giving it up? If you are not considered safe enough to be allowed to fly or go hunting, why are you living next door to me? If we believe that someone is a terrorist why don't we indict him?"
