Purple parking spaces are popping up all over public parking lots in Warren, Ohio, designated specifically for Purple Heart medal recipients.

Warren also recently added designated parking spaces for all veterans too.

City maintenance supervisor Bob Plant said there are about 200 Purple Heart recipients and more than 20,000 veterans in the county. As the seat of Trumbull County, Warren is home to the county Veterans Services Commission as well.

“It’s a token of appreciation for their service and to send veterans the message that we value your service,” Mayor Doug Franklin said. “We wanted to do that in a public way.”

But not everyone thinks it’s such a good idea.

Roseann Siderits, chairwoman of Cincinnati’s Coalition Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes, said government should not dictate where its citizens can and cannot park.
