The Obamas go shopping on Small Business Saturday

President Obama celebrated Small Business Saturday by buying books and ice cream.

Saturday afternoon, Obama and his daughters Malia and Sasha drove out from the White House to visit Upshur Street Books in northwest Washington, D.C., according to pool reports. Obama had visited Politics and Prose bookstore in each of the past three Small Business Saturdays.

All three Obamas walked out with books in tow, including the historical fiction/adventure Kingdom by Cynthia Voigt, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck, Book 8, by Jeff Kinney, Dork Diaries 1: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life by Rachel Renee Russell. They also picked up Purity, a novel by Jonathan Franzen, which according to its Amazon product description is about "youthful idealism, extreme fidelity and murder," and focuses in part on a struggling young girl named Purity who is "saddled with $130,000 in student debt" and works for an organization that "traffics in all the secrets of the world."

Obama and his daughter also visited Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market and Cafe and ordered ice cream popsicles. The total bill was $9, which Obama paid for in cash.
