NATO sets emergency meeting after Turkey downs Russian jet

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization will hold an emergency meeting Tuesday after Turkey's military shot down a Russian jet fighter, and defended its action as one that fell "within the framework of engagement rules."

An official told the AP that the purpose of the meeting is to "for Turkey to inform allies about the downing of a Russian airplane."

Turkey reported that two of its F-16s shot down a jet fighter after it crossed into Turkish airspace from Syria and ignored 10 warnings over the course of five minutes to cross back into Syria airspace. Russia separately confirmed that one of its jets had been shot down by shellings from the ground.
