Facebook may be making it easier for others to sift through your conversations, but it's only to make to sure things are "personalized and unique."
The company announced on Thursday that it was rolling out an expanded search function called "Search FYI," which will begin including user posts, past and present, in results retrieved by the site's search function.
Among the benefits, the company said in a blog post, are "better search results," being able to "find public conversations with search," and the ability to "search results with public posts and posts from friends."
The social media site also emphasized the ability to find posts being made about a given topic in the moment that events are taking place. "When something happens in the world, people often turn to Facebook to see how their friends and family are reacting," Facebook's VP of Search Tom Stocky said in a blog post. "When you tap into the search box and start typing, we'll now offer timely, personalized search suggestions."
Not everyone is happy with the change. "No more privacy by obscurity," writes Josh Constine, the editor-in-chief of TechCrunch. "Though the privacy of people's posts isn't changing, everything you've ever said will be much easier to find now. That means an off-color joke from years ago and the wrong privacy setting could combine to get you in trouble with your employer."
