The global average temperature was the highest on record for September, putting 2015 on the path to become the hottest year on record, the federal government reported Wednesday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it "was the highest September temperature on record, surpassing the previous record set last year."

The monthly data the agency released shows the January-September 2015 period being the highest on record, especially the summer months.

The agency also said September's record was "the greatest rise above average for any month in the 136-year historical record, surpassing the previous record set in both February and March this year."
