The House Foreign Affairs Committee is expected on Thursday to approve a bipartisan resolution calling on Palestinian leaders to end the anti-semitic incitement U.S. lawmakers believe is fueling recent violence.
The resolution by two Florida representatives, Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Democrat Ted Deutch, calls on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to "discontinue all official incitement and exert influence to discourage anti-Israel and anti-Semitic incitement in Palestinian civil society."
It also directs the State Department to track and publicize incidents of incitement by Palestinian authorities.
"The recent wave of attacks in Jerusalem and throughout Israel is very concerning. The seeds for this violence have been planted in the minds of young Palestinians by their leaders, who for years have incited hatred, undermining prospects for peace," said Chairman Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif.
"This has to stop. The Palestinian Authority must fulfill its responsibility to restore calm and the incitement must end."
