A week ago, before the filing deadline for third-quarter campaign fundraising reports, Marco Rubio's campaign let it be known that he had raised $6 million in the July-August-September period.
"Aides to Mr. Rubio announced at a donor retreat in Las Vegas that he had raised $6 million in the quarter, according to a person present," reported the Wall Street Journal on Oct. 8. "Marco Rubio's campaign raised $6 million in the third quarter, according to donors briefed on his finances," reported Politico the same day. "Sen. Marco Rubio revealed … that his campaign raised $6 million in the third quarter," reported the Washington Examiner.
So that was it: Rubio raised $6 million. At least that was it until Thursday, when the Rubio campaign was required to filed its formal fundraising report. And it turns out that Rubio in fact raised $5.7 million in the third quarter — $5,724,784.46, to be exact.
Other campaigns gave more accurate previews of their fundraising totals. At about the same time the Rubio campaign announced its numbers, the Ted Cruz campaign sent out word it had raised $12.2 million in the period. When the papers were filed, Cruz had raised $12,218,137.71. Two weeks before the filing deadline, the Ben Carson campaign announced it had raised "more than $20 million." When the papers were filed, Carson had raised $20,767,266.51. Also two weeks before, the Jeb Bush campaign said it had raised more than the $11.4 million it raised in the second quarter. When the papers were filed, Bush had raised $13,384,832.06.
