Three days before the deadline for the United Nations to adopt the resolution ratifying the Iran nuclear agreement, the International Atomic Energy Agency said that it will be able to finalize its assessment of Iran's nuclear weapons program by its Dec. 15 deadline.
Tehran has clarified to the IAEA outstanding issues regarding its program, paving the way for the international agency to provide a final report on allegations that Iran pursued a nuclear weapon. That report will be given to the United Nations and the six countries that brokered the deal with Iran: Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States.
"[A]ctivities set out in the 'Road-map for the clarification of past and present outstanding issues regarding Iran's nuclear program' were completed," the IAEA said in a brief statement. "By 15 December 2015, the Director General will provide, for action by the Board of Governors, the final assessment on the resolution of all past and present outstanding issues ..."
Adoption of the agreement and the IAEA assessment pave the way to the implementation of the deal.
After Sunday, and with IAEA confirmation that Iran fully cooperated with its investigation into past allegations that it pursued atomic weapons, Iran can press for economic sanctions relief in exchange for cuts to its nuclear program.
