Utah Medicaid expansion gets possible deathblow

Utah Republicans rejected a proposal from state leaders to expand Medicaid under Obamacare, immediately sparking concerns about whether the expansion would be approved.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported late Tuesday that a proposed expansion received only seven votes out of 63 Republican state House members during a closed-door meeting.

The reason was concerns about exploding costs and opposition from medical providers who may have had to pay for part of the program, the paper said.

The Tribune reported that Republican Gov. Gary Herbert wanted to call a special legislative session this month to pass the expansion, but that now appears in doubt.

So far 30 states have expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. That includes several red states that want waivers from the Obama administration to make changes for Medicaid eligibility under the expansion.
