U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has had surgery Wednesday morning to replace a stent in her right coronary artery.

Ginsburg, 81, is resting comfortably and is expected to leave a Washington-area hospital within 48 hours.

Court spokeswoman Kathleen Arberg said Ginsburg had the procedure at MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center after a coronary blockage was discovered. Ginsburg experienced some discomfort Tuesday night during routine exercise and was taken to the hospital.

Ginsburg has been on the court since 1993.
