Rogers: 'Putin is playing chess... we're playing marbles'

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee breaks down the 'big picture' of the crisis in the Ukraine

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said Sunday the crisis in Ukraine presents another situation in which President Obama is getting out-maneuvered on the global stage by Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, “Putin is playing chess, and I think we’re playing marbles.”

“It’s not even close,” Rogers, chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told “Fox News Sunday.”

His remarks follow Russia sending troops into Ukraine’s Crimea region, amid Ukraine’s months-long political upheaval in which residents in late February ousted their leader.

Though Rogers often calls on the Obama administration to be more aggressive on foreign policy, he outlined a measured approach that called for sanctions but cautioned against sending the U.S. Navy into the region.

“Sending [forces] into the Black Sea is not a good idea right now,” he said. “There are not a lot of [military] options on the table.”

Obama said Friday "there will be costs" should Russia take any military action in Ukraine.

Rogers said the United States should simply withdraw from the upcoming G-8 Summit in Sochi, Russia, instead of threatening not to attend planning sessions.

He said Putin’s recent moves follow a series of events in which Russia has made bold, unchecked moves. Among those cited is Russia's helping Syrian President Bashar Assad stay in power during United Nations negotiations.

“It is not an isolated incident,” he said. “Russia believes nobody is going to stop them.”

He also said Russia’s upper chamber has a proposal that would allow Crimea to become part of the Russian Federation, if leaders of that region want to do so.
