Rep. George Miller, the top Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee, says he will not seek re-election in 2014 after four decades in Congress.

Miller says in a statement on Monday that he looks forward to one final year in Congress "fighting the good fight and then working in new venues on the issues that have inspired me."

Miller was first elected in 1974 in a district in the San Francisco Bay area and has been a leading Democratic party voice on education, labor and health care policy.

He has been a longtime adviser to House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and served on her leadership team while she served as House speaker.
