A Maine man who used a racial slur and suggested shooting President Barack Obama in a Facebook posting has resigned from all boards and committees on which he serves in the town of Sabattus.

David Marsters submitted his resignation in an email. The Sun Journal said he apologized for his remarks.

The resignation came hours before selectmen were to meet Thursday evening to consider removing Marsters from all positions he held in the town.

Marsters was interviewed by the Secret Service and Sabattus police are investigating. Town Manager Andrew Gilmore said the comments were hateful and the opposite of what the town stands for.

Marsters, a retired police officer, proposed a town ordinance to require heads of household to own guns, but selectmen unanimously rejected the idea.
